Shed code plates were carried by all locomotives to indicate their home depot.  
This was a tradition carried over from steam locomotives until replaced by simple self adhesive stickers

Steam Locomotives were generally cast iron, while diesels carried cast aluminium plates.

Shed code plates were bare metal, black with white letters or latterly embellished red with white letters.
